Opportunities to Volunteer at Viewpoint

Viewpoint Photographic Art Center is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization; we have no paid staff. We rely on our members for support, both financial and operational. Volunteers are the heart of our organization.

Our goal is to make volunteering fun, rewarding, and a great way to meet other people who share an interest in photography.

Viewpoint has current needs in the following areas:

Gallery Docents:
Docents serve an extremely important role - they are our visitor’s first impression of Viewpoint. Docents perform a variety of functions, including interacting with visitors and engaging them in conversation about the current exhibit, informing them about Viewpoint and the benefits of membership, taking registrations for workshops, checking in prints for shows, and perform miscellaneous tasks as needed.  Some PC computer knowledge is helpful. Docents are assigned in pairs to cover the 30 hours per week the gallery is open. A minimum commitment of time is expected. Training is required and is provided.  Being a docent is an excellent way to become involved in the daily workings of the organization.

Second Saturday Receptions:
Viewpoint’s Second Saturday Receptions have been extremely well attended since our move to our current location – frequently exceeding 2,000 visitors per reception. Now, with the opening of the Step Up Gallery, Viewpoint is in need of more volunteers to help host Second Saturday receptions.   Specifically, Viewpoint is looking for 4 to 6 committed volunteers per reception to help interact with the public, provide a level of security for our exhibits and to assist visitors with sales and other needs.

Exhibit Hanging Crew:
These volunteers are responsible for taking down and hanging all exhibits in the Main Gallery and Step Up Gallery. The closing exhibit is taken down and the new exhibit is hung on the Monday and Tuesday before Second Saturday each month.  The crew needs a lead person and assistant for each gallery, people to take down the exhibit, help pack and ship prints, hang the new exhibit and arrange the lighting. Five to six people are needed each month to complete these tasks.

Membership:
The Membership Committee manages all the membership information in Viewpoint’s database. With the launching of the new website, there is a need for an administrative assistant to the membership coordinator. This person must have good organizational skills, be PC computer savvy, and be able to make a one year commitment to this job. The job provides an opportunity to know the inner workings of Viewpoint and to become familiar with its members. Training is provided.

Viewpoint is looking for people to help produce our monthly newsletter and website content. We need people to write brief articles, gather new items from Viewpoint members, help organize the newsletter and update content on our website.

One or more volunteers are needed to assist in the preparation of exhibit publicity materials, artist statements, and website content. Additional duties include preparing exhibit labels and image file creation. Strong writing skills are essential. Basic computer skills (to include word processing and image file preparation) are necessary. Most tasks can be completed at home and electronically transmitted to designated committee members. Training is provided. This position presents an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with various photographic artists and their work.
