Building With Light

Renowned British architectural photographer Eric de Mare’ (1910-2002) described photography as “building with light.”  Implicit in Mare’s description of photography is the intimate connection that exists between light and the building blocks of compositional design, which together form the architecture of the photograph.
 
Using the nineteenth century architecture of Old Sacramento as our subject, we will develop skills for using natural and artificial light.  We will discuss the quality, direction, intensity and color of light and how to work with the interplay of highlights, shadows and reflections. We will learn how to combine different lighting situations with the building blocks of compositional design – rhythm, balance, tone, color, line, texture, etc. – to produce compelling and meaningful photographs.  As we photograph throughout the morning, we will focus on producing images that together form a cohesive body of work.

Your Instructor: Terry Nathan

Terry Nathan is a professor in the Art/Science Fusion Program at UC Davis, where he teaches "Photography: Bridging Art and Science." He also has taught landscape photography workshops in California and Texas.  Terry has served as juror and judge for art exhibitions and he has been invited to speak on the art, history, science and practice of photography at several national symposia.  Terry’s fine art work, which centers on architecture, landscape, documentary and art/science fusion, has been published in a variety of magazines and shown in several national juried exhibitions.
